CUSTOM SCALE-UP: HOW MPI SUPPORTS ACCELERATOR TENANTS
The Accelerator is home to many material science-related companies that specialize in a variety of polymers and coatings.
Crosslink, a former tenant at the Accelerator, has a team of highly skilled scientists with world-class expertise in electrochemistry and polymer science-based technology. The company focussed on creating electroactive polymer solutions in the lab.
Demand for one of Crosslink's core business products was outstripping supply. The company was unable to synthesize a material on a larger scale to meet increased demand.
Jeff Burger of Mississippi Polymer Institute built a relationship with Crosslink by working in its laboratory to fully understand the process. He recommended additional equipment to meet Crosslink's demand, and MPI invested in a 15-liter reactor that was specific to the client's process.
A successful pilot scale-up of the material was completed and qualified by Crosslink's chief chemist. MPI successfully performed the synthesis two more times to validate that the process was repeatable.
The tests that MPI performed for Crosslink resulted in process improvements for the material duplication in a shorter time period. MPI also added value by providing a new test method to help with future product quality control.
The relationship between tenant companies at the Accelerator is key to helping each other succeed together. This is an example of how MPI supports the Accelerator's goals by meeting the challenges of technology and scale-up.
