Physical Testing

PHYSICAL TESTING: MECHANICAL AND THERMAL PROPERTIES, TENSILE STRENGTH AND IMPACT RESISTANCE

MPI’s expertise and equipment can cover virtually any testing scenario related to physical and mechanical properties -- from thermal properties, tensile strength and impact resistance to flexural property determination and melt flow rate.

Utilizing state-of-the-art instrumentation such as Instron mechanical testing machines, Differential Scanning Calorimeters (DSC) and Thermogravametric Analyzers (TGA), MPI can test your product’s physical properties over a range of temperatures.

MPI can create standard test samples, condition samples in accordance with standard test methods and provide detailed and explanatory reports once results are obtained.

PHYSICAL TESTING BY TYPE

  • Abrasion: Abrasion resistance testing is offered with variety in the texture of the abrasion and cycle time.
  • Color, Gloss, Haze: The visual characteristics of a sample can be quantitatively determined using instrumentation for color, haze and gloss measurements.
  • Compression: MPI offers a wide range of standardized and custom compression testing with multiple fixtures and load ranges from 20 lbf to 20,000 lbf.
  • Constituent Content: Constituent content analysis is available for plastics and composites with test methods for ash content, fiber content and void content.
  • Density and Weight: We can provide density and weight determination using an analytical balance with a density apparatus.
  • Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC): DSC can provide melting temperature, crystallization temperature and glass transition temperature information, as well as crystallinity information.
  • Durometer Hardness: MPI can provide hardness measurements in both the Shore A and Shore D durometer scales. These two scales encompass the vast majority of durometer hardness measurements.
  • Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA): DMA can provide tensile strength, modulus and glass transition temperature information, as well as thermal transitions over time.
  • Flexural: MPI offers a wide range of standardized and custom flexural or 3-point bend testing with multiple fixtures and load ranges from 20 lbf to 20,000 lbf.
  • Friction: Coefficient of friction testing is available with load ranges from 5 gf to 5 kgf.
  • Impact: Multiple varieties of impact testing are available such as drop dart impact testing, Izod impact testing, un-notched impact testing and instrumented impact testing.
  • Melt Flow: Melt flow by extrusion plastometer can provide melt density, viscosity and volume rate information, as well as flow rate or Melt Flow Index (MFI).
  • Minimum Film Formation Temperature: This instrument allows for the determination of the minimum film formation temperature of a coating.
  • Particle Size: Particle size analysis is available for both wet or dry materials. Materials can be run in water or virtually any other solvent, and particle size measurements are available from 0.01 to 2800 microns.
  • Peel: MPI offers a wide range of standardized and custom peel testing with multiple fixtures and load ranges from 5 gf to 5 kgf.
  • pH Testing and Titration: MPI offers testing such as pH and titration for liquid analysis.
  • Reaction Calorimeter: This instrument is capable of high temperatures with measurement and control of parameters for determination of chemical information and heat balance over the chemical process.
  • Rheology: MPI offers testing in rheology to obtain viscosity information, strain/shear rate information and melt analysis. Multiple configurations are available such as capillary, cone and plate and parallel plate.
  • Shear: MPI offers a wide range of standardized and custom shear testing with multiple fixtures and load ranges from 20 lbf to 20,000 lbf.
  • Tear: MPI offers a wide range of standardized and custom tear testing with multiple fixtures and load ranges from 20 lbf to 20,000 lbf.
  • Tensile: MPI offers a wide range of standardized and custom tensile testing with multiple fixtures and load ranges from 20 lbf to 20,000 lbf.
  • Thermogravametric Analysis (TGA): TGA can provide degradation temperature information, as well as isothermal studies, moisture loss and weight-loss-over-time studies.
  • Weathering: Accelerated weathering testing is available and includes UVA and UVB exposure with temperature humidity. Additionally, salt fog is available. Environmental chambers are also available to condition samples at a range of temperatures and humidity.
  • Viscosity: A wide range of viscosity measurements are available, including cone and plate, parallel plate and spindle; measurements can utilize shear rate sweeps or multiple RPMs.

  • BYK-Gardner Micro Tri Gloss Meter: The visual characteristics of a sample can be quantitatively determined using instrumentation for gloss measurements.
  • BYK-Gardner Handheld Color Spectrophotometer: The visual characteristics of a sample can be quantitatively determined using instrumentation for color measurements.
  • BYK Gardner Haze gloss system: The visual characteristics of a sample can be quantitatively determined using instrumentation for haze and gloss measurements.

  • Rhopoint MFFT Bar 90: This process is a controlled way to determine minimum film formation temperature.
  • Stable Microsystems Texture Analyzer: Coefficient of friction and peel testing are available with load ranges from 5 gf to 5 kgf.
  • TA Q2000 Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC): DSC can provide melting temperature, crystallization temperature and glass transition temperature information, as well as crystallinity information.
  • TA Q500 Thermogravametric Analyzer (TGA): TGA can provide degradation temperature information, as well as isothermal studies, moisture loss and weight-loss-over-time studies.
