Analytical Testing

ANALYTICAL TESTING: MATERIAL PROPERTIES AND COMPOSITION

Compositional analysis, analysis of unknown materials or raw material contaminants and identification of products are among the analytical testing services available at Mississippi Polymer Institute, which also offers a chemistry wet lab capable of analyzing extractable materials.

MPI’s analytical capabilities are virtually unlimited. We have a multitude of in-house capabilities including access to equipment at The University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Polymers and High Performance Materials. Utilizing methods such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Electron Microscopy, MPI can help you solve your most challenging analytical problems.

If you are having trouble with your material, your process, or you just have an analytical question that you want answered, MPI can help. We can analyze your material to determine properties, composition, changes and much more. We also have experience with testing to improve processes and to explain material properties.

ANALYTICAL TESTING SERVICES BY INSTRUMENT TYPE

  • Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM): The AFM provides phase morphology and surface topography characteristics.
  • Density and Weight Instruments: We can provide density and weight determination using an analytical balance with a density apparatus.
  • Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC): DSC can provide melting temperature, crystallization temperature and glass transition temperature information, as well as crystallinity information.
  • Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA): DMA can provide tensile strength, modulus and glass transition temperature information, as well as thermal transitions over time.
  • Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) with multiple attachments including (Attenuated Total Reflectance) ATR and FTIR microscopy, as well as Near IR and Raman: FTIR and Raman provide functional group assignment, structural analysis and identification of an unknown over a wide range of wavelengths. Accessories such as ATR and FTIR microscopy enable virtually any sample to be analyzed easily.
  • Gas Chromatography (GC): Mass Spectrometry (MS) detector, as well as Flame Ionization Detector (FID): The GC provides separation, using multiple detectors such as FID; the MS can provide compound identification.
  • Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) with multiple solvents and detectors including ultraviolet (UV) and refractive index (RI): The GPC, also known as Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC), provides molecular size and weight range information.
  • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR): The NMR provides chemical structure identification and analysis of unknowns. This technique is available in both solution state and solid state with a variety of nuclei offered.
  • Permeability and Barrier Properties: We can provide information on oxygen permeability, solvent vapor permeability and water vapor permeability.
  • React IR: Real-time in-situ mid-infrared spectroscopy to monitor chemistry under reaction conditions.
  • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Imaging with Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX): The SEM can image materials in the micron range with surface level imaging. Polishing and gold sputter coating are available to provide the best images. The EDX provides elemental analysis.
  • Thermogravametric Analysis (TGA): TGA can provide degradation temperature information, as well as isothermal studies, moisture loss and weight-loss-over-time studies.
  • Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) Imaging with Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX): The TEM can image materials in the micron to nanometer range looking through the bulk of the sample. The EDX provides elemental analysis.
  • Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) and HPLC with ultraviolet (UV) and Evaporative Light Scattering (ELSD) detectors: The UPLC/HPLC provide separation of compounds and concentration information using very high pressures.
  • UV-Vis Spectrophotometry: The UV-Vis can determine the absorption or transmission of your sample using UV/Vis light.
  • X-ray Diffractometer (XRD): The XRD provides crystallinity information such as percent crystallinity.

  • FEI 200 Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Imaging with Thermo Noran 7 (EDX) and Selected Area Diffraction (SAD) capabilities: The SEM can image materials in the micron range with surface-level imaging. Polishing and gold sputter coating are available to provide the best images. The EDX provides elemental analysis; the SAD provides elemental information across an entire image.
  • Gas Chromatography (GC): Mass Spectrometry (MS) detector and Flame Ionization Detector (FID): The GC provides separation; the MS can provide compound identification.

  • Mettler Toledo 4000 React IR: Real-time, in-situ mid-infrared spectroscopy to monitor chemistry under reaction conditions.
  • Mocon Ox-Tran Model 2/21 Oxygen Permeability: We can provide information on oxygen permeability.
  • Mocon Aromotron Solvent Vapor Transport Unit: We can provide information on solvent vapor permeability.
  • Mocon Permatran-W Water Vapor Permeability: We can provide information on water vapor permeability.
  • Rigaku Ultima III X-ray Diffractometer (XRD): The XRD provides crystallinity information, such as percent crystallinity.
